Standalone VR Sensory Room Prototype
A portable, wireless implementation for accessible sensory experiences
Building on insights from the PCVR co-design research, this project translates the customisable VR sensory room to a standalone platform. The Meta Quest 3 implementation removes the need for expensive PC hardware and cables, making the sensory room truly portable and accessible.
This prototype represents a key step toward creating a practical intervention tool that autistic individuals could use in various settings — at home, work, or in public spaces where sensory regulation support is needed.

From PCVR to Standalone
Adapting the sensory room for standalone VR required significant technical optimisation while preserving the features that participants identified as important during co-design:
- Performance Optimisation — Reduced polygon counts and optimised shaders for mobile GPU
- Preserved Customisation — All key personalisation options retained
- Mixed Reality Integration — Leveraging Quest 3's passthrough for grounding techniques
- Portability — No cables, no PC required — use anywhere
Current Status
The standalone prototype is currently in development, with planned evaluation studies to assess its effectiveness as a portable sensory regulation tool.
